… is a bit of a mystery to me.
In overture I would like to stress that I am not testing beer while alone with the kids. No, this beer has been waiting for my review for about a week now. And it is it`s due time.
Maisel`s Weisse, brewed in Bayreuth, is probably the most advertised beer in Bayreuth. I have seen Maisel`s Weisse logo everywhere and also a lot of bars are offering this particular beer. So I had high expectations. Which probably ruined it for me.
I was expecting an easy to like beer, what I got was the opposite. The beer has a lovely colour, not exactly white (although it is a white beer) but slightly more brownish (amber could describe it). It has a nice strong CO2 presence, that is why it foams quite nicely. Immediately the smell stood out. I could smell all sorts of things, most of all a wheat like smell. The first taste was like a bomb in my mouth and I mean that in a bad way. There was just to much happening. The yeast taste mixed with something fruity and I couldn`t get rid of the taste of wheat that was overpowering in the smell of the beer. So after the first taste I put the beer down for a couple of minutes, to let it breathe and settle a bit (and so that my taste buds could recover). After a couple of minutes I tried it again (really wanting to like it). The second time it tasted really sour. After I finished it, it did leave a pleasant after taste in my mouth, but it could not compensate for the entire experience of drinking it.
Granted, not the best picture, or the most appropriate beer glass.
Maybe this beer is made for more adventurous beer drinkers and not “Sunday” drinkers like me. Maybe Maisel`s Weisse has to grow on you. Maybe it is just not my sort of beer. But it is different than most of other beers I have tasted in my life. And just for that reason alone, you should try it and decide for yourself. Maybe, just maybe it will be the best beer you have ever tasted. For me it was a long way from that…
